Rachel Small, Birth Assistant

Rachel is an EOD wife and the mother of a beautiful one-year-old girl named Samantha.  She graduated from UCLA with a BA in Psychology in 2007, and from NYU with a BS in Nursing in 2009.  She began working as a cardiac nurse, but transferred to a post-partum unit one year later. Following a cross country move to Florida and the birth of her daughter she wanted to continue her work in maternal-newborn care, but felt compelled to do so under the midwifery model of care. “I feel blessed to have an opportunity to be a part of the GBO team and be invited into people’s lives at such a personal, emotional, and exciting time.  Watching a woman give birth in an environment in which she is comfortable with minimal interventions is a truly empowering experience.” Rachel is CPR, NRP and STABLE certified.  She has also received training as a CAPPA Postpartum Doula, Community Lactation Educator, and Childbirth Educator.

Joy Weirick, Birth Assistant

Joy has been a part time birth assistant at GBO since December of 2010. Natural birth has been her passion since 2007 when she had an out of hospital birth with her son after realizing there had to be a better way than she witnessed in the hospital every day. She then started her path to help other moms get the choices they want in birth as a doula and birth assistant. She has been an RN since 1998 and in the NICU since 2003; and has a long term goal of becoming a CNM. She loves that women are empowering themselves when they make their birth choices and loves being a part of GBO where those choices can be supported safely. She is also honored to be able to teach some of the safety classes at GBO to continue to ensure safe, caring birth services for the wonderful strong women in this area.
